Six post-secondary/college options
for high schoolers!

Accountability is one of the essential factors in beating procrastination.

Are you a high school junior or senior? What will you do after graduation? Do you know what your post secondary options are?

Get job? Go to the military? Go to college? Will that job allow you to be independent (pay rent/mortgage? Afford a car? Afford healthcare? Utilities? Afford your lifestyle?)

Are you having these college conversations with your parents at your kitchen table?

Is your high school counsellor or a trusted teacher guiding these college conversations at school? If so, great! Pay attention and take action. If not, get helpful updates here.

Times are changing and the educational landscape has developed more and more variety. As a parent and an educator, I used to think that a 4 year college experience is for everyone; but, boy, was I wrong. After seeing my former students develop into successful citizens, I have learned to appreciate that variety of post secondary experiences.

Some students want to attend 4 year colleges and universities; others want to thrive in technical programs; while some desire to serve in the military and others want to start a business. Believe me: being an adult is harder than it looks and each responsible adult must have a way of making an honest living. So, consider all your options.

Colleges and post secondary experiences come in many sizes and level.

Large ivy league schools are selective and quite expensive. Their worth comes in the immensely valuable alumni network and the brand name.

Small ivy league schools are selective and expensive as well.  Many ivy league schools have generous financial aid packages that can be earned. Same as large ivy league schools, their worth comes in the alumni network and the brand name.

Public 4-year colleges/Universities (whether it be public or private) are affordable due to lower fees for students who attend school in their home state. If you attend a public college that is not your home state, be prepared for higher costs. Many public college have a recognisable brand name and alumni network as well.

2 year junior colleges are helpful as they prepare students to enter the 4 year college or university prepared for the rigor of that level with less accumulated debt.

2-year vocational schools are affordable, useful and practical for an immediate skill set which allows you to gain employment or open a business with a trade that is in-demand. Many students do know know the power of learning a vocation. Look into the in-demand skills that allow you to work with your hands and earn a handsome income or open a business that is supremely important to society.

Online schools are available to anyone to attend from anywhere on the planet. Have a desire to work and attend school at the same time, then an online school is a great option. Now more acceptable and respected, online programs usually have a price tag to rival their brick and mortar experiences.
